We all feel better when we look our best and, on Mallorca, you’ll find many professional services to help you enhance your natural beauty, and face the world perfectly groomed.

Luxury spa facials

null

The variety of professional facial treatments today is almost mind-blowing, and we are spoilt for choice on Mallorca when it comes to facials at the luxury end of the spectrum. Here are just a few to tempt you: Purohotel Spa uses Seaskin products – a brand linking eco-luxury and cosmetics. Their Seaskin Detox Facial is a deeply cleansing and purifying treatment using biological products. Son Brull Spa’s top-of-the-range Holistic Facial combines aromatherapy facial care with an acupressure head and facial massage. The treatment includes a nourishing face mask containing linseeds and buckwheat. Ninety minutes of pure pleasure… Japanese massage is an element of Spa Bodyna Maricel’s Ko Bi Do Precious Youthful Face Care Massage, an anti-ageing treatment that has the effect of a natural face lift, improving the skin’s radiance and firmness.

Facial Microdermabrasion

null

A number of Hollywood A-listers have turned to this skincare treatment because it gives an ‘instant facelift’ effect without expensive surgical procedures (and the related recovery time). The science behind this increasingly popular therapy is that tiny grains are applied to buff the skin’s epidermal surface – known as the stratum corneum – removing the dead skin cells and debris that result in dull-looking skin and blemishes. A powerful type of exfoliation, using sophisticated equipment, the treatment is not invasive and won’t damage the skin’s lower layer, or dermis. It can be beneficial in dealing with age spots, scarring, and open pores, and can be used on the face, chest, and hands. The original microdermabrasion technology was born in the ‘80s, and known as crystal microdermabrasion. The newer diamond-tip microdermabrasion is also now available on Mallorca.  The treatment is recommended no more than once a month and is best carried out by someone with plenty of experience and appropriate training, in a specialised spa or clinic.

Deep-cleansing facials

null

Enhance the benefits of a regular cleansing regime by treating your skin periodically to a deep-cleansing facial, which can stimulate collagen and elastin production and result in skin with a more youthful appearance. Deep cleansing helps remove the toxins we’re subjected to day-by-day, and counters the effects of sun, wind, and air pollutants. Many spas and beauty salons offer several types of facial, and treatments usually last around one hour. As well as a deep cleanse, your treatment could include exfoliation, extraction, and mask; some include a facial and scalp massage. Deep-cleansing facials can help teenagers with spots and acne-prone skin and a 30-minute Teen Facial is offered at Portixol Hotel (Palma) and Espléndido Hotel (Puerto Sóller). There’s a large choice of deep-cleansing facial types and products offered on Mallorca, with some of the best and most up-to-date to be found in 5-star hotel spas and the more upmarket beauty salons in Palma.

Oxygen facial

null

Oxygen facials have become popular among those seeking the secret of youthful-looking skin – because they are don’t involve injections and are non-medical procedures that are offered in spas and good beauty salons. The facials first require the skin to be cleaned and exfoliated before oxygen – usually treated with skin-friendly supplements, such as vitamins – is gently introduced into the pores using a special piece of equipment. It’s a painless treatment that oxygenates the skin to help it retain firmness and smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, helps encourage production of new cells and collagen, and is suitable even for those with sensitive skins. Although oxygen facials result in younger-looking skin with a cleaner, brighter appearance, they are not a substitute for a twice-daily skincare programme at home. The Belmond La Residencia Spa offers the highly effective 25-minute Carboxi-Express facial, and Talise Spa at the Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa has a 90-minute oxygen treatment that’s new for this year. At the other end of the island, Salon B in Portals Nous offers a new oxygen facial, using seaweed-based Thalgo products.

Facials designed for men

null

Today’s metrosexual man knows that looking after his complexion is as important as it is for a woman. Men are increasingly turning to professional facial treatments to help their skin deal with the rigours of daily life – such as shaving, and stress. To meet their needs, some spas and salons on Mallorca are catering for male customers, by offering treatments tailored specifically for them. Among these is Belmond La Residencia Spa, which offers the Gents 02 Facial, using Natura Bissé products, which includes a scalp, neck, and shoulder massage. In Palma de Mallorca, Carlos Martin’s barber shop (we love the old-fashioned barber’s chair) offers a choice of facials and other treatments. The Marigan Clinic and Hair & Beauty Concept – both in Palma – also welcome male customers. The Shine Spa at the Sheraton Mallorca Arabella Golf Hotel tempts men with their organic facial; there’s a rosemary-based facial for men at the 5-star Son Brull Hotel’s Spa, and the Talise Spa offers a one-hour anti-stress facial.

Manicure & pedicure

null

Well-manicured hands form part of the first impression we make when we meet new people, yet a professional manicure or pedicure is one of the least expensive and quickest beauty treatments available. For semi-permanent flawless colour, opt for CND Shellac or OPI Axxium Soak-off Gel Lacquer, which give nails a high shine for two weeks, with no or minimal chipping. These quick-drying lacquers won’t chip when you’re dipping into your handbag to pay for your manicure – but do need to be professionally removed at the salon.

Jiana Beauty Center

Trust Diana Vasileva and her team at Jiana Beauty Center in Palmanova for all the latest in skin care treatments.

Some spas and salons offer added luxury to their mani/pedi treatments, such as a moisturising mask, pampering massage, or even a chilled cocktail, cava, or G&T!  For special occasions, you may want to indulge in something more elaborate – nail art or adornments – offered at specialist nail bars. You can even get together with a group of friends for a private mani/pedi party at The Nail Bar in Palma. Whether you go for a simple ‘file and polish’ or one of the more sophisticated manicures or pedicures now available, you’ll leave the salon or spa feeling groomed to perfection.

Hairdressers

null

When it comes to hairdressing and haircare, there’s plenty of choice wherever you are on Mallorca – including salons run by talented hairdressers who have moved to the island from other parts of Europe. Stefan Niedenzu has styled the hair of a number of celebrities for photo, TV, and movie shoots, and has his by-appointment-only salon in Palma. Udo Walz is another renowned German hairdresser in Mallorca’s capital. British hairdressers on the island include Eden Hairdressing in Santa Catalina, and Salon B in Portals Nous. Several 5-star hotel spas also offer hairdressing services by appointment. Longing for longer hair? Hair extensions may be the answer: check out The Extension Shop in Palma; a new German salon offering hair extensions is expected to open this spring in Sóller. If hair loss – as a result of alopecia or medical treatments such as chemotherapy – is affecting you, or you simply want a new temporary look, Monna Lisa in Palma offers a large choice of women’s and men’s wigs in a variety of colours and styles. In Sóller, upcoming new hair salon Artist Calabruix will also sell wigs.

Mobile hairdressers

null

For special occasions such as weddings, the services of a mobile hairdresser are invaluable – saving time and stress on the day. The bridal party’s preparations are an important and memorable part of the big occasion and, by having a hairstylist on hand, some treasured memories can be captured on camera in the setting of your choice – rather than in a busy salon. It’s great fun for the bride, bridesmaids, and mothers of the couple to share this time together, over a glass of champagne. Mobile hairdressers arrive at the agreed location with all the equipment they need, and you can negotiate how long they are on hand for any hair touch-ups that may be necessary for the official photos. For brides, in particular, it’s worth having an advance appointment to discuss and have a trial run of the desired hairstyle with any chosen headwear, such as a veil or tiara.  Many salon stylists will travel to attend to clients in hotels, homes, or other venues but there are also mobile hairdressers on Mallorca, who offer a professional service in the location of your choice.

Make-up artists

null

For those occasions when all eyes – and cameras – are focused our way, it’s worth using the services of a professional make-up artist to help you present your best face to the world. Even if it’s not for a wedding or other special occasion, having your make-up done by a professional can introduce you to new techniques, products, and colours you might not previously have considered – and open your eyes to a new you. It’s very easy to become stuck in a make-up rut! You’ll find some excellent and very experienced Spanish and international make-up artists based on Mallorca, with the talent to enhance natural beauty and disguise any imperfections. Some of these artists are also qualified hairstylists. Jennifer Jane (who won a UK ‘Wedding Industry Expert Award’ in 2014), Monica Ramos, and Monika Hübert have all provided their expertise for past abcMallorca fashion shoots. Some hotels – including Belmond La Residencia in Deià – offer wedding packages, comprising make-up, hairstyling and manicure.

Permanent make-up

null

If the normal ageing process, or drug treatment (such as chemotherapy), has led to a loss of definition in facial features, permanent make-up is a possible solution. It’s also the answer for those who always want to appear made-up effortlessly. Permanent make-up uses tattooing to create the required effects, such as fuller lips, defined eye lines, or well-shaped eyebrows. Because the treatment is permanent (although it may fade in time) and invasive, it’s vital to choose a fully qualified specialist in this field and, having done so, to be specific about the results you want. Permanent make-up is becoming increasingly popular as a beauty treatment, but we’ve all seen bad examples – often ‘created’ by those with insufficient experience or knowledge. Grupo Marin in Palma de Mallorca works with the latest micropigmentation technology, from the German company Riso, which uses the latest and best allergy-tested colours, free of harmful substances. The Ri-soft liner Ultima unit is the newest patented technology, equipped with a micro-sensor to manage and apply precisely the colour that’s needed to suit the subject’s skin. It’s exclusive on Mallorca to Grupo Marin.

Waxing and laser epilation

null

Unwanted body and facial hair can be swiftly and almost painlessly removed, and many salons and aesthetic clinics on Mallorca offer treatments for women and men. Shun the shaving for longer-lasting smoothness. Australia’s renowned pain-free Lycon Precision Waxing is the hair-removal choice of many A-listers. Regrowth is slower than with conventional waxing and the treatment is effective even on very short hairs. Epilation is one of the most popular of today’s laser-based aesthetic procedures. A series of treatments is needed for the best results and, although complete and permanent hair removal is not guaranteed, results are impressive. It works by using brief light pulses of specific wavelengths to penetrate the hair sheath to the root. Alexandrite, diode and IPL (intense pulsed light) are the types used for epilation, and whilst IPL is not a laser, it is effective. It’s important to choose a professional salon or clinic for these treatments, as they are not suitable for some skin and hair types.

Cellulite

null

It’s a condition that still isn’t widely understood, but is widely recognized: skin that looks dimpled and lumpy, and often called orange peel, or cottage cheese, skin. More common in women because of their type of skin and connective tissue, and hormonal influence, it’s most often found on the thighs and bottom. To avoid getting cellulite, experts recommend a healthy diet rich in fruit, vegetables, and fibre. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding stress as much as possible, are also thought to help. Avoiding tight elastic in underwear can also help. If cellulite has already taken hold, and you hardly dare to bare on the beach, there are various non-surgical treatments available on Mallorca that can help reduce the appearance of the condition. mySkin in Bendinat offers mesotherapy and micro-needling: two different treatments targeting cellulite. Belmond La Residencia Spa’s Guinot Technispa treatment uses an exclusive body machine to firm and tone the body through lipo-dermal-sculpting. At Dr Morano’s Palma clinic, Accent radiofrequency therapy is said to be safe, effective, and with long-lasting results. In Inca, Medisan also offers cellulite treatment.

Non-surgical aesthetic procedures

Signs of ageing such as lines, furrows and loss of elasticity can be more intensively targeted with widely-recognised injectables such as Botox, dermal fillers and vitamin-enriched facial mesotherapy. It goes without saying that it’s vitally important to do your research and entrust only a highly qualified, experienced practitioner if you’re considering a procedure of this nature. Dr. Estrella Fernández is a well-respected aesthetic surgeon who offers a range of non-surgical treatments at her Palma clinic.

Both clinics also provide laser and peeling procedures, increasingly popular with both male and female clients who are concerned about the effects of long-term sun exposure.

Cosmetics from Mallorca

null

If you care about what you put on your skin, and are concerned about the chemical ingredients used in many cosmetic and beauty products, look no further than Mallorca for your next beauty purchase. The island is home to several manufacturers of kinder, but effective cosmetic and beauty products, made from natural ingredients grown on Mallorca. Here are some favourites: Gaia Natural Cosmetics, founded by Trudi Murray, offers artisan products for all the family, made from pure and simple natural and organic ingredients harvested from her land. They are unadulterated with chemicals and come in eco-friendly packaging. Bellesa de Claret (Castell Son Claret) uses Gaia products. Ecological Cosmetics was founded by Linda Nicolau in 1993, and offers effective and sustainably manufactured (and packaged) products made from natural, high-quality ingredients. Free of parabens and artificial colours, the products are used in hotels spas – including U Spa by Barceló – throughout Spain. Think Cosmetic in Pollença produces a range using natural extracts and ingredients from Mallorca, to benefit the skin and hair. A number of hotels – including Son Brull – on Mallorca use Think Cosmetic for guest toiletries.
