About Peguera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Peguera<\/strong> \u2013 also known as Paguera \u2013 is a beach resort in the municipality of Calvi\u00e0, Mallorca, and has been dubbed \u2018Little Germany\u2019 by many, because of the popularity of the resort with German visitors, who also gather in the nearby towns of Port Andratx and Costa de la Calma. The resort is about 6km north of Santa Ponsa<\/strong> and near to Camp de Mar, and comprises three fine, sandy beaches: Peguera Romana, Peguera Tor\u00e0 and Peguera Palmira \u2013 all offering the typical amenities sought by holidaymakers in search of sun, sea and fun. Peguera is also an excellent base to explore some of the stunning<\/strong> natural features of south west Mallorca<\/strong> as it has good access to mountain trails and some of Mallorca\u2019s prettiest mountain villages in the Tramuntana range. The community here is very international; Peguera is noted for its cleanliness and enjoys a compact centre with all the practical amenities, as well as a main strip which mainly caters to tourists.  The town also has direct motorway access and is about a 30-minutedrive to the Capital of Palma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History and Culture of Peguera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The touristic development of Peguera began in the late 1950s, and the housing surrounding the resort has grown since then. The resort has traditionally been the venue for lively annual German-style beer festivals, attracting visitors from all over the island, but the Oktoberfest at nearby Santa Ponsa is now competing for beer-drinkers.  For everyday eating and drinking, there are numerous bars, caf\u00e9s and restaurants in Peguera to suit all tastes and budgets. There is a particularly good range of German restaurants<\/strong>. Shopping \u2013 <\/strong>Most of the shopping in Peguera is to be found in Avenida Peguera<\/strong> which is not directly on the front line (where there are more restaurants and bars)  \u2013 but runs parallel to it.  Here you will find not only the usual beach-wear and gift shops, but boutiques and leather goods \u2013 many residents in the south west go to Peguera for shoe shopping.  You will also find a good range of practical shopping such as chemists and supermarkets.  Peguera traders aim at the middle price range, so for shoppers in search of more designer experience it is well-worth a visit to the pretty fishing port of Puerto Andratx which is a short taxi or bus ride away. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The major attractions in Peguera are the beaches which are safe, sandy, child-friendly and have excellent facilities.  The pretty cove of Cala Fornells<\/strong> offers a quieter experience than the main beaches and is home to the front-line excellent hotel \u2018Petit Cala Fornells\u2019. Lazing on the beach is a popular option in Peguera, but if you are feeling a little more sporty or adventurous there are many things to do including<\/strong> tennis<\/strong>.  See our guide for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peguera is one of the few places in Mallorca where you are likely to see a few optimistic surfers, the town is not a major hub for sailing but you will find fun trips with glass bottom Catamarans<\/strong> and boats for hire.  There are also cruises to the nature reserve island of Sa Dragonera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peguera is well located for hikers and bikers<\/strong> and is the starting point for the trail to the mountain village of es Capdella<\/strong>.  This is an easy trail to walk but there is also plenty more to explore elsewhere for more ambitious hikers and climbers.  There is also a main road which goes from Peguera to es Capdella \u2013 it is well worth taking time to travel this scenic route, as the natural beauty is outstanding. If you feel like a change from the mainstream atmosphere of Peguera there are several exclusive beach clubs and resorts nearby<\/strong>. While staying in Peguera, it\u2019s worth exploring the neighbouring Camp de Mar<\/strong>, with its small and popular island caf\u00e9\/restaurant reached by a wooden bridge. Camp de Mar is also home to the beautiful but challenging 18-hole Golf de Andratx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Living in Peguera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Peguera has an international community and attracts many German residents and visitors.  It is very family-friendly but also caters for couples and young singles.  Much of the architecture dates from the 20th century and mostly consists of traditional Mediterranean, white holiday homes.  Many of the shops aimed at tourists close during low season months but amenities and shops providing basic local services remain open all-year-round.  It is not a lively location for winters, but there are enough services to make year-round living viable. Property here sits firmly in the mid-price range.  You should still expect to pay a premium for front line apartments and houses, but prices are not as expensive as the more exclusive town of Puerto Andratx and adjacent Camp de Mar. Expect to pay from 1-2 million euros for a sea view villa.  You can snap up a two-bedroom apartment for less than 200,000 up to 500,000 for something more special with good sea views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surrounding areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The town of Andratx itself \u2013 which featured in the books of writer Peter Kerr \u2013 is worth a visit. It really comes to life when the market is in town, on Wednesday mornings. On the outskirts, in the area of Sa Coma<\/strong>, is CCA Andratx, Mallorca\u2019s largest centre for contemporary art . . . and feels a world away from the holiday resort atmosphere of Peguera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
